Unlike some of the informal claims floating around online, this part is real and worth stating precisely: the area around Jawai Dam was formally notified as the Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve<\/strong><\/a> by the Rajasthan Forest Department on 23 February 2010, under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The protected area covers roughly 19.79 sq. km, with additional villages folded into the reserve boundary through a further notification in 2018.<\/p>\n That designation matters for how you should think about a visit here. This isn’t a fenced national park with gated zones \u2014 protection in Jawai works through a combination of forest department oversight and the far older tradition of Rabari tolerance toward the leopards sharing their grazing land. The reserve sits around Jawai Dam<\/a>, western Rajasthan’s largest dam, whose reservoir spans about 13 sq. km, separate from the roughly 102,315-acre command area the dam irrigates across Pali and Jalore districts.<\/p>\n Panthera pardus fusca<\/em>, the Indian leopard<\/a>, is the reason most people book a Jawai trip in the first place. Current estimates put the reserve’s population at roughly 50 to 70 individuals<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 among the highest densities of leopards living outside dense forest anywhere in India, sheltering in granite caves rather than tree cover. Livestock does get taken here. It is generally absorbed as the cost of sharing the landscape, a position rooted in the Rabari’s own belief system rather than in any assumption that the leopards will keep their distance.<\/p>\n Smaller than its spotted and brown cousins, and unusual among hyenas for often forming monogamous pairs, with both parents raising the cubs. Mostly nocturnal; you’re far more likely to find fresh tracks at dawn than the animal itself.<\/p>\n Melursus ursinus<\/em>, IUCN-listed as Vulnerable. Built for digging into termite mounds rather than hunting, with a long snout and shaggy coat. Adult males run 80\u2013145 kg, females 55\u2013105 kg.
